Backups and Restore

We have daily redundant disaster recovery backups of each server, and each website under a maintenance plan is also backed up and stored for up to 90 days, which we can easily restore as needed. However, we recommend you also have your own backups of your websites. This article covers details on backups and restore of your websites.

Backups and Restore Using Plesk Control Panel

To create your own backups, in Plesk you would log in to your Plesk Control Panel URL (sent to you in the Welcome email when signing up for service), and then go to Backups & Restore. You must configure Remote Storage before creating any backups. We do not want any backups stored on the same server as your website, for redundant backup purposes, because if the server has issues, you can't easily migrate your website if you don't have access to your own backups.

To configure any of the remote storage providers, click on the Remote Storage button at the top right.

It supports any of these providers:

  • FTP(S)
  • Amazon S3 Backup
  • Dropbox Backup
  • Microsoft OneDrive Backup
  • Google Drive Backup
  • DigitalOcean Spaces Backup
  • Configure any of the remote storage providers you prefer, and then go back to Backups, and create a new backup.

Please Do Not Rely On Our Backups

We will never lose your data intentionally, and we take a lot of proactive precautions to avoid any data loss for any reason, including the server hard drives breaking all at once some day. We want to be transparent about what we do to secure your website data, while at the same time recommending that you still should create your own backups, as you can never have too many backups.

WordPress Maintenance Plan Backups

As part of our website maintenance plan, we take daily backups of the site every early morning to AWS S3, and store them for up to 90 days. So if you ever need a quick restore, just shoot us an email and we can restore from that morning or any day previous to that as you like. Our maintenance plan system takes quick and reliable full and incremental backups, with very fast restores that compare files at the binary level to restore only those missing, and includes a script outside of WordPress that can restore even a crashed or infected site.

If your website is not on a maintenance plan, you should consider signing up for one if your website is important to you, both from a financial perspective, if your e-commerce website is down and offline for any reason you may lose a lot of orders, but also from a time value perspective, if your website is deleted due to billing issues or human error or malware, rebuilding or losing the many posts, pages, and other data may be near impossible.

Account and Server Backups

We take daily backups and daily block-level snapshots of each entire server.

For emergency-only (disaster recovery) purposes, we take daily server backups, stored in secure BackBlaze B2 for up to 7 days, which includes complete Plesk account, subscription, and website data of every client on each server. We can often restore complete Plesk accounts, and any websites under those accounts. It is a manual process and please note that for issues not related to a server issue or websites not under a maintenance plan, restores of this type requested by clients are considered disaster recovery, and may incur emergency restoration fees.

Server snapshots are created daily and stored in the data center on the data center's secure network attached storage, separate from the server itself. It can be used to quickly clone a server, recover data that may be corrupt otherwise, or other disaster recovery purposes.
